# About us

For centuries, performers have looked for a more natural way to stay connected to the score. Turning pages, marking them, keeping together: small as they seem, these motions have always stood between rehearsal and the stage, and they break both the flow of a performance and the player’s focus.

CueFlip began with a simple question:

If the music could tell where the performer is, could the score follow it on its own?

We believe the best technology does not ask people to adapt to machines. It lets machines understand what people express.

## Our mission

CueFlip is building an intelligent score for professional musicians.

With real-time audio alignment, CueFlip recognises where the music is during a performance and times each page turn to the tempo actually played, so the performer never has to stop to work a device and can give all their attention to the music.

It does not depend on a fixed beat, and it does not ask anyone to change the way they play.

Whether the tempo changes, the room changes or one performer differs from the next, CueFlip stays focused on understanding the music itself.

## Born on stage

CueFlip started in the lab and has been refined through one rehearsal and performance after another.

All through its development, CueFlip has been part of Primal Guitar Quartet’s daily rehearsals. Every problem a rehearsal turned up pushed the next update forward.

From recognition that was not yet accurate to the conditions of a real stage, from one player to several in sync, CueFlip has grown up in real performances.

On 7 August 2026, CueFlip was released on the App Store. The next day it went on stage with Primal Guitar Quartet at Blue Note Beijing: its first use in a formal concert.

Since then CueFlip has been used in many concerts and rehearsals, and featured in [a report by the Central Conservatory of Music](https://www.ccom.edu.cn/info/18041/268501.htm) (in Chinese). Music Weekly also ran a feature in its print edition on how CueFlip was developed and how it is used on stage.

## Our founder

CueFlip’s founder, Yuze Pan, was born on 31 July 2011. In May 2018 he began studying classical guitar with Li Le.

In July 2019 he won the children’s category of the Changsha International Guitar Festival competition. In September 2020 he entered the primary school of the Central Conservatory of Music, studying with Associate Professor Li Jiajiong, and in September 2023 he went on to the Conservatory’s middle school. In 2024 he won the junior category of the 12th [Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga International Guitar Competition](https://concursoarriaga.com/2024-2/) in Spain, and then of the 13th [Andrés Segovia International Youth Guitar Competition](https://www.segovia-competition.com/competition-2024/award-winner-2024/) in Germany. In July 2025 he received an Honorary Gold Award at the Singapore International Music Festival.

Years on stage showed him at first hand the limits of turning pages the traditional way, and set him exploring what music and technology might do together.

In 2025, during Primal Guitar Quartet’s rehearsals, he wrote the first version of CueFlip. The first attempt did not work: offline audio alignment could not be made to follow live playing, and once ported to a mobile device the prototype ran into problems of speed, power and accuracy.

In May 2026 he started CueFlip again, this time from the existing research in music information retrieval and audio alignment. Once a prototype had proved the approach, he ported the core engine to Swift and brought CueFlip into Primal Guitar Quartet’s daily rehearsals for testing.

From then on, every rehearsal became part of the development. Problems that came from different players, tempos, rooms and background noise were recorded, tested and verified again. To keep the system steady in real performance, he built up a testing and regression system for the real-time score-following engine, and kept improving its real-time performance on mobile devices.

Starting from problems met on stage, Yuze Pan brings a performer’s experience into CueFlip’s development, and keeps the technology centred on what music actually needs.

## Beyond the score

We believe the music tools of the future will not replace performers. They will free more of their creativity.

From practice on your own to chamber rehearsal to the largest stage, technology should be part of musical expression, not another burden.

CueFlip is exploring a new possibility:

wherever the music goes, the score follows.
